The Power of Simple Systems: How to Build a Fitness Routine That Works for You
One of the biggest challenges in fitness is finding a routine that works long-term. Complex workouts or overly rigid systems often lead to burnout. The key to making fitness easier and more sustainable is to create simple systems that you can easily stick to, no matter how busy your life gets. This blog will outline how to build a straightforward fitness system that supports your goals.
Keep Your Routine Flexible: Instead of sticking to a strict workout schedule, create a flexible system that allows you to adjust based on your time, energy, and mood. For example, have a few workout options (strength training, cardio, yoga) that you can choose from each week, depending on how you feel.
For example: I have provided my clients with different types of workouts based on intensity and the person can select a workout based on their energy levels or time available (ie Low Intensity, Moderate Intensity & High Intensity workouts)
The 3-2-1 Approach: Commit to working out three times a week, doing at least two different types of exercise (e.g., strength training and cardio), and aiming for one active recovery session (like walking or stretching). This simple approach can keep your routine varied and balanced.
Automate Your Routine: Set specific days and times for your workouts and treat them as appointments. Use reminders or an app to help schedule and prioritize your workouts, making them part of your routine.
I send my clients Google Calendar invites for our 1-1 sessions plus workouts they need to do on their own so it is in their schedule and more likely to commit to it.
Create a "Fitness-Friendly Environment": Set up your space to make fitness easier. This could mean having your workout clothes laid out the night before, keeping your gym gear ready, or setting up a workout playlist that motivates you. A prepared environment makes it easier to take action.
Start with a Weekly Review: Take a few minutes at the start or end of each week to assess your fitness goals and review your progress. This helps you stay focused, make necessary adjustments, and stay motivated.
Fitness doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective. By creating a simple, flexible system that supports your goals and fits your lifestyle, you can make working out a consistent and sustainable part of your week. Keep it easy, enjoyable, and adaptable!
