The Power of "Why"

This blog is about my Mom and her recent journey on walking everyday. And I am super proud of her commitment to her goal! Even though this is about my Mom’s walking journey, I believe this can be useful for any person with any health & fitness goal.

She first focused on her “Why”; why does she get up early and go for a walk everyday. Her goals are:

  • stay healthy

  • alleviate joint pain

  • improve mental health

  • 15-20 minutes (minimum) of personal time

Here are some tips from my Mom to get you started and stay on it:

  • Find your “Why”; this will keep you on the path when those hard days come up

  • Be Reasonable

    • Start small; a little goes a long way.

    • Focus on consistency rather than intensity

  • Prioritize

    • Set your alarm the night before and commit to it

    • Schedule it in your calendar; lock it in!

  • Make it easy to go

    • Get your clothes & shoes ready the night before

    • Eliminate any extra time

  • Track your progress

    • Choose a way to track your progress, whether that is writing it down in a notebook or use one of the MANY apps (ie Strava or Runkeeper, etc)

    • This will help to keep you motivated and see that your hard work is paying off!

  • Warm-up, warm-up, warm-up:

    • Do a proper warm-up before starting; stretch and dynamic. This will prepare your body and mind

  • Reflect

    • Take some time to reflect on how far you have come and be proud of it!

Just get started. “One day, or day one”
